Budgie Birds!

We discovered something new at the Reston Zoo today - budgies!! (commonly known as pet parakeets).  I'm not sure why, but we've always overlooked this enclosed bird house.  When a friend recently mentioned how much her kids like to feed these brightly colored birds I decided we must check them out on our next visit.  Of course we fed the sheep and goats and took a tractor ride first!  The boys were a little unsure of what to think when we first walked into the birdhouse and birds were flying and landing all around us.  They each had a "budgie stick" to hold out for the birds to eat, and they were definitely not shy!  At one point a bright blue one landed on Owen's head, which he was not thrilled with at the time, but couldn't stop talking about all afternoon once we were home.  Spencie was pretty funny with the whole experience - I spent most of my focus and peripheral vision trying to keep the budgie stick out of his mouth.  I think he wanted to see what the birds found so tasty!  He was very serious as he held the birds on his stick though, watching their every move.  All in all, the budgies are a fun addition to our regular zoo outings!
